Afghanistan is an agricultural country, in which almost 80% of the populations rely on agricultural produce and crops as a source of income and livelihoods. However, agriculture and animal are still done using traditional technologies and know-how, with a very low efficiency and productivity. In western regions of Afghanistan, farmers engage in two types of cultivation, rain fed and irrigated farming. Due to a severe shortage of water and irrigational infrastructures, most of the people depend on rain fed cultivation, with a very low productivity. Unfortunately, continuous droughts had a very negative impact on agricultural productivity, affecting the livelihoods of almost entire Afghanistan rural population in the last few decades. This has caused all stakeholders to focus on implementing emergency agricultural projects.ARAA has so far implemented 58 projects in agriculture sector of Afghanistan in western regions. These projects included emergency agricultural inputs distributions (seed/fertilizer), nursery and gardening programs, veterinary services, poultry, beekeeping, silkworm production, etc. Most of these projects were were implemented in almost all districts of western provinces (Herat, Badghis, Farah and Ghor), covering hundreds of thousands of beneficiaries.
